No matter their current financial situation, location, or background, all young people have places to be.

Every young person deserves the right to affordable and unrestricted travel in order to access necessities like health clinics, school, work or social activities. These activities are essential to their wellbeing and empower them for the future. Unfortunately for many young people, the cost of transport is prohibitive.

While there are existing fare subsidies available to students, the cost of transportation is still disproportionately putting pressure on low-income families, those experiencing homelessness, and young people who live independently. The inability to pay a fare due to financial circumstances can cause an undue burden on students when they are fined for ‘fare evasion’.

Removing cost barriers to transport reduces inequality and supports young people to reach their full potential in their education, work, sporting and social opportunities. Many young people are also extremely concerned about the climate crisis, and increasing uptake of public transport is one solution that we want to push forward in reducing the impacts of climate change.

Letter to the South Australian Government:

We are asking the South Australian Government to abolish fees on all public transport in South Australia for students. It is vital that the government invests in our future, as fully subsidising public transport will be an investment in South Australia’s next generation of leaders’ education.
